Part I: What James Lloyd doesn't tell you
about Sound Body "Health" Products
The Death of
Mrs. Francis Steffan-Hayes and Sound Body "Health" Products
Elizabeth Gabriele Steffan-Hayes
, deceased wife of Francis Steffan of
the American Voice Radio Network,
was a very kind woman with a
sweet disposition.
On June 17, 2005, she
died of cancer, while taking health products
from the Sound Body "Health" line.
Although Christian Media Exposed
does not suggest that the use of Sound Body "health"
products products killed Elizabeth Hayes, the evidence is clear:
Taking the products which "Christian" mail order magnates
James Lloyd and Susan Lenox sell under the "Sound Body"
"outreach ministry", did nothing to keep the cancer from taking her
life. James Lloyd has said on the radio that Elizabeth did
not begin using the products soon enough for it to help
however, assuming that she trusted these products, it is
difficult to imagine that she would
not have been taking them until it was "too late". This
raises the question: If these products are genuinely
beneficial as Susan Lenox and James Lloyd
would have you believe, would they not have kept Mrs.
Steffan-Hayes healthy?
Although the exact
Sound Body health products which Mrs. Steffan-Hayes took was
not disclosed, it is highly unfortunate that
she had taken these herbal cures over another form of
treatment and it does raise an obvious question: If the Sound
Body products were as efficacious as they are touted to be
by Susan Lenox and James Lloyd, why did they not help her?
Even yet, why would she have trusted her life to such
products?
The Psychology of Selling Quack Medicines
When
people are sick, they will do almost anything to be well.
This is what has made the American medical complex so
wealthy and powerful. Because the desire to survive is so
strong, most people will pay any amount of money to stay
alive and to feel well.
Over the past few decades, more people have sought
"alternative" treatments for various life threatening
illnesses. With the increased interest in homeopathic and
holistic treatment modalities though, have come a number of
unscrupulous "quacks", who have seen in the erosion of confidence in
traditional medicine, an opportunity to make a quick buck on
the fears of those suffering from terminal diseases such as
cancer. Strangely, many Americans will freely take medical
advice from unlicensed, uneducated charlatans. This is
especially true when such
medical advise is presented by people who use religion
as an emotional appeal to purchase worthless remedies.
More than 100 years ago, the
investigative
journalist Samuel Hopkins Adams noted in the magazine Colliers Weekly the following:
"The
American quality of shrewdness fails us when we go out to
buy medicine. When the average American sets out to buy a
horse, he is a model of caution. But look again when he is
seeking the most precious of all possessions, sound health.
He becomes an inveterate gull."
Yet, despite the
fact that Americans are more literate than they were 100
years ago, Mr. Hopkins observation still rings true today.
Sound Body
Sound Body, hosted
by Susan Lenox, regularly promotes remedies which are not
approved by the FDA. What is amazing is the fact that,
although Lenox has no education in the field of medicine,
she pretends to be an expert in the field, often referring
to her "research" in her broadcasts. However, if one listens
closely enough to her, it becomes clear that, not only is
she not qualified to give medical advise, but she is barely
articulate enough to speak intelligently on any subject even
remotely related to health issues. Given her lifestyle of
alcohol consumption and drug abuse, it
is a wonder than any would give her credibility in the area
of health and medicine.
Susan Lenox has a newsletter, which is also called "Sound Body. Susan
doesn't write this newsletter because she doesn't have the
skill to do so. If you
asked anyone, why someone who can't write her own material
would have a newsletter, one struggles to find a reasonable
conclusion. It may be
that she wants so badly to have people believe that she is
smart, that she has lent the name of her product pitching
show to the publication, but more than likely, it is done, is to peddle
snake oil:
those
unproven medical treatments, and other products, which rake in thecash from
ignorant fools, who will buy anything in their desperation to
avoid the consequences of their past decisions, which her "Sound Body" products
aresold to treat.
Drugs
Although the pharmacological
industry does spend a great deal on testing drugs for
efficacy and safety (regardless of the sometimes spurious
test results), once those regulatory expenses have been met,
the drugs themselves are very cheap to produce. It is this
large margin between the cost of the chemical precursors
from which the drugs are made, and the price an end-user
will pay for them, which has made both licit and illicit
drugs in modern America so profitable. In short, it's a BIG money maker!
Cancer
Despite the fact that the medical industry has declared
cancer to be "treatable" yet "incurable", the fear which
grips Americans when faced with this malady has left so many
sufferers feeling a sense of helplessness, that they seem to
be willing to surrender their critical thinking skills, to
obtain hope that they might find a "miracle cure". It is
these desperate souls which are preyed upon by
uneducated, unscrupulous hucksters, who see in their
desperation, an easy way to make money from the fear of
those who so suffer. There are few who fit this description
better than James Lloyd and Susan Lenox, doing business as
Christian Media / Sound Body.
Using God to
Sell Cancer Treatments
Some time ago, James Lloyd and
Susan Lenox came upon a very dangerous product which they sold to treat
cancer called, "Black Salve" ("BS"). The following taken
from the Sound Body website (before they removed the product
from their product line because of legal issues). Christian
Media Exposed examines in detail, the advertisement for this
"BS".
The viewer
is warned that this section contains graphic images of
people injured for life because of their use of "Black
Salve".
Here is
information about a health product that could save your
life!"
Note the conditional promise
which was made "It COULD save your life"
Because
you're looking at this data on this websitem (the typo was
made by Lloyd, not Christian Media Exposed) you are
probably interested in health data that comes from an
alternative perspective. Like you, I also have a
serious distrust of “mainstream” medicine."
This "distrust" is a sign that
you are likely the target he hope to sell to.
"It isn’t that we
don’t like Doctors, it’s just that the medical
industry seems to be structured so that Doctor’s have
an incentive to stay within the rather narrow confines of
what will benefit them. For example,
statistics make it very clear that huge numbers of
surgeries are financially motivated – as
opposed to what is the very best treatment for the
patient."
The preceding sentence
reinforces that preexisting "mistrust" which Lloyd hope to
capitalize upon.
Watch next as he plays the fear
card.
The following sentence is designed to
appeal to women, who understandably, fear losing their
breasts to cancer. Also note that Lloyd makes
claims without citing a single documentable source for his
data. Watch closely how the following words are
crafted to imply that their product will help people with
cancer.
"As you probably
know, cases of skin cancer are skyrocketing. Some
think it’s because of the deterioration of the ozone layer
(or other environmental factors), while others think it’s
related to our lack of good nutrition. Regardless, of the
cause, the fact is, skin cancers and other
growths are spreading very quickly."
"Abnormal growths
take the form of strange looking moles, warts, cysts, and
other unusual bumps. Several of these can be indicators of
cancer. Worrisome growths can show up just about
anywhere, but these days, there seem to be several common
types. For instance, women seem to get lumps in their
breasts far more often than in previous generations".
"The good news is,
we have found an herbal remedy that many people say can
effectively remove many different types of growths. It’s
called Black Salve."
Note the fact that Lloyd did not
expressly say that it will cure your cancer. He simply
linked the word growth to the word cancer.
"To put it
bluntly, this is one of the most amazing things I’ve
ever seen. After using this product to successfully
remove an unwanted skin growth, I can say without
hesitation that I believe this is something that God has
given us to use -- under the right circumstances."
Note the phrase "I believe
this is something that God has given us to use" Now he's not
speaking as a medical professional, it's a simple matter of
FAITH. This conditional promise is most likely made to keep
them from getting sued. It is this linking cancer
cures/treatments with God which is most contemptible.
"As we studied
Black Salve, we learned that it’s actually
an
old Indian herbal remedy. Eventually, we even
found the lady that received the formula from a close
friend that was from the very family of Native
Americans that originally discovered the herbal
combination. From her, we’ve learned a great deal about
Black Salve. "
Note that he stated that they "studied" the product. Could
this be to disguise the fact that James Lloyd, far from
being a Doctor, or even having an education in medicine for
that matter, didn't even complete his
education in High School?
Further into the sales copy, he again mentions cancer.
"Breast Lumps &
Black Moles
Sometime later, my
wife’s sister came up with a lump very close to her spinal
column. She had previously had a breast lump cut out by
Doctors, and she was very depressed that she now had
another one and might need to have this uncomfortable
procedure done again. The physician expressed concerning
about cutting so close to her spinal column.
My wife talked it
over with her sister, and convinced her to try the
Black Salve. It worked perfectly, and the tiny scar it
left was even less noticeable than the scar left by the
cutting approach she had previously used.
At this point,
Black Salve had been used 3 times in our family
– and all 3 efforts were very successful. We became
very enthusiastic about the herbal product, and began to
recommend it to anyone that would listen. "
Further into the ad, we see that
they avoid claiming the product will "cure" cancer. This is
most likely a crafty way to avoid trouble with the
Postmaster, who is bound by law to seize cancer cures and
report violators for criminal investigation.
"Our First
Disappointment
We had all quickly
learned that when the Black Salve is applied, it
slowly penetrates abnormal growth cells, and destroys them
on a cellular level. It’s important that you see that
it doesn’t cure cancer (– or anything else for that
matter. What Black Salve can do is kill
abnormal tissue – it doesn’t deal with whatever caused the
growth in the first place. We’ve found that it can take 2
to 6 weeks depending on the size and consistency of the
growth. "
Regardless of how cleverly
worded, the implication is clearly made: Skin cancer is
abnormal tissue. Note the fact that they are not telling you that it will
CURE your cancer...They are telling you that it will KILL YOUR CANCER.
The ad continues:
"We had decided we were going to
distribute Black Salve by mail order as we already
have a Christian ministry distributing herbal products (the
Sound Body ministry group), alternative health information,
and other religious materials (However, because of oppressive
government regulations and potential product liability
problems associated with irresponsible people that could
hurt themselves with this, we determined we need to do more
than just take orders for the herbal compound. "
We decided to create
a complete information system so that those
considering using Black Salve for the first time can
know how it works, and what they can expect if they try it. This is the best way
for us to make this herbal product available in a
responsible manner because everyone that chooses to
use this product must do so at their own risk."
From this "caveat", it would
seem as though Lloyd knew of the danger of Black Salve use,
as he is casting off any personal responsibility for any
potential injuries caused by the use of his product.
In the next portion of this ad,
Lloyd states that he and Susan did "research" on the
product. Apparently, they either did not research, or care
what happened to Gail Bumpus or Paulette Teel (photos
above).
The first thing we did was to
research Black Salve and then we came up with an extensive written
report on what we were able to find out about it. Then we
added some recently acquired knowledge (which is a secret
unless you send us money) to the written instructions that
were printed by the woman that formulates the herbal paste.
As we studied it, we collected over 60 photographs of
various cancers and other growths on people that have used
Black Salve – sort of a before and after photographic
history of numerous cases of skin anomalies, breast cancers,
malignant moles, and other abnormal growths that people
tried to remove with Black Salve.
When you order the Black Salve
System, you receive a printed copy of these photographs, but
these photographs may also be viewed online through the link
at the bottom of this letter. I would imagine you’ll find
these images just as shocking as I did. As the photos show,
some people have been able to get rid of much larger growths
than I would have ever imagined.
In addition to the
printed photographic package, the written report, and the
usage instructions, we arranged to produce a one-hour radio
program on the subject. The cassette features an interview with the woman that
received the formula for Black Salve from her friends
in the Native American family that originally formulated it.
It also features Susan and Kristin Lenox – my wife
and her sister respectively – and they both discuss their
personal experiences with Black Salve.
Thus, in addition to the
Black Salve product itself, we’ve developed a
significant package of information to help you, the
potential first time user of Black Salve, to be able
to effectively evaluate whether or not you choose to use this product.
Now for the "hard close". Lloyd
this time states that this product has been "given" by "God", unqualified by the phrase "we believe".
Last but not least,
we are so sure you’ll be thrilled with the Black Salve
package we’ve developed, we’re going to make you an
outstanding offer – see that also at the
bottom of this page. In closing, here at the Sound Body
ministry, we wish you well as you
seek to explore the use of the natural herbs that God has
given us in order to be healed.
Sincerely,
James Lloyd
Sound Body
P.S. Some of you know the
government is trying to stop people from having the freedom
to choose herbal remedies through new laws. Even if you
don’t need it now, you might consider ordering some Black
Salve for future use – while you still can.

"Our Conditions To Purchase Black
Salve
Number 1. you have to agree not
to hold us responsible for whatever goes wrong..."
